Duke Nukem developer goes under due to financial problems

Say it isn't so!  Tragically, the gaming community's dreams of seeing a Duke Nukem revival takes one step closer to "never gonna happen."

Founded in 1987 by Scott Miller and George Broussard, independent developer 3D Realms once created three Duke Nukem titles, publishing numerous others.  Recently, they produced two Max Payne games, published Prey by Human Head Studios, and brought Duke Nukem 3D to Xbox LIVE.

Now, it is closing its doors, letting employees go, and is expected to officially shut down by the end of this week.  A reliable source within the studio cited insufficient funds as a major factor in their decision

On the bright side, Deep Silver and Apogee Software will not be affected by the loss, and Duke Nukem Trilogy for DS and PSP is still undergoing development.

Update: Take 2 has released a statement concerning 3D Realms.  VP of communications Alan Lewis confirmed the two companies had a publishing arrangement, but Take 2 was not funding Duke Nukem Forever.  According to Lewis, they still retain publishing rights for the title, meaning Duke Nukem Forever may still see the light of day.

The last Duke Nukem game was just that, the last one. Unless the developer makes the game code open source we can take a wild guess that this is officialy the end.

so long Duke nukem! it was fun while it was around.

I seem to remember seeing a trailer for 3 Duke Nukem games, with 2 being for DS/PSP. I wonder what will happen to those. Also, this should serve as a lesson to other game companys, DONT TAKE SO LONG MAKING GAMES.

Blizzard have a couple of million people paying £8 a month each for WOW, 3D realms didn't.

At this point if they took the rights and made a Duke Nukem HD - basically a remake of the original game with its co-op mode intact, high res gfx and sound effects remade (but with the Duke voiceovers kept intact, can't have Duke sounding different) using say the Quake 4 engine, I'd buy that.

Not necessary. The Duke Nukem 3D Music Project (you'll have to search, won't let me use more than 2 URLs ) is another route to take for the sound, though what I've played with the linked tools, it sounds and plays amazing already.

At the same time they don't ride games that were a success for them over a decade ago for major funding, they seem to keep quite an eye on the well to make sure it doesn't dry up. With WoW out there they have time to stall around all they want now.

The Xbox Live Arcade version of Duke Nukem 3D is halfway there. It's a very well polished title, with instant rewind and eight player online co-operative play.
