Assassin's Creed II gameplay at long last, plus God of War III goodness

11:10 am

Let the show begin!  Montage of various titles including lots of God of War.

11:13 am

Jack Tretton, CEO & President appears!  Over 160 games expected this year.  Of course, 2009 is going to be the best year ever for the PlayStation 3, says Tretton.  PlayStation generated around 30 percent of the industry's sales in 2008.

Show us some more exclusives, Jack Tretton, sir!

Okay, starting with the PlayStation 2, here's some talk about the pricing and growth rate.  The PS2 outsold any HD console in April 2009, despite being in its ninth year.  Now there's 9 million more PS2 users in the world.  The PS2 will feature nearly 100 new titles in 2009, and Tretton is confident "today's PS2 owners are tomorrow's PS3 owners."

The PlayStation 3's install base grew by 40 percent since the last E3 convention, to 22 million.  Later this year, Sony plans to expand the PS3 user base to South American regions.

More than 24 million PSN users worldwide now.  Then some review stuff, about how well inFAMOUS has been doing.  Bring on Uncharted 2 Among Thieves with Evan Wells from Naughty Dog.  At midnight tonight, the Uncharted 2 beta will launch, but we get a first look at the single player content.

Crowd cheers from the start and applauds.  Guess we have some fanboys in the audience.  Man, good thing you don't have people clapping and cheering randomly every few minutes while you're gaming at home -- it's really distracting.  Until our gameplay video is uploaded, you'll just have to settle for a trailer.

11:27 am

Now we have M.A.G. live gameplay!  Andy Bodewin of Zipper Interactive.  Sweet, first look at what this game is REALLY all about.  Holy crap, that's a lot of players on the screen.

Bonus points are given for every action you take toward your objective.  If your teammates die, they will respawn from helicopters that fly in when you've secured an area with landing zones.  M.A.G. will be playable at the expo, of course.  Interface could use some work still, but it's exciting progress.

11:32 am

PSP titles coming out in 2009, including Dissidia Final Fantasy in August, and an Assassin's Creed game.  Additionally, Sony is making a new committment to tween and casual gamers, teaming up with major networks like Disney and Nickelodeon.

11:34 am

Kaz Hirai, president and CEO of SCE, trades places with Tretton.  Oh, what's this?  A really freakin' tiny PSP.  Looks like the size of a digital camera.  Other than being known as "the worst kept secret of E3," the new PSP go has 16 GB of internal flash memory, built-in Wi-Fi, integrated Bluetooth, and other features, this could be the gamer's ultimate media device.

You'll also be able to access the PSN via your PSP go via Media Go, which lets you easy access to PSN from your PC as well.

New developer tool kit Sense Me will be coming out soon in anticipation of the PSP go.  PSP tool kits will also get a price drop this year.  Expect the PSP go in North America and Europe on October 1th for $249.99, then November 1 in Japan.

11:41 am

PlayStation Store's video service will be made available natively on the PSP this year.  Today, the video service will be getting content from Showtime, G4, VIZ Media, and much, MUCH more.

11:44 am

Kazunouri Yamauchi, founder of Gran Turismo appears to announce Gran Turismo PSP.  He demonstrates the handheld version on a PSP go, though we can't see it from the audience.  Still, we do learn a little about the game.  Gran Turismo PSP will be rich in content despite its compact size, including a wide selection of vehicles, tracks and gameplay modes.  Added features include the PSP's multiplayer capabilities utilizing Adhoc.  You'll also be able to trade and share your cars with other players.  Now, you will be able to collect all available cars without having to do ALL the work yourself!

Lastly, we have a video of Gran Turismo PSP.  The game will be coming out October 1 with the launch of the PSPGo.

11:49 am

Hideo Kojima gets the fans going when he appears to announce the Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker game for PSP / PSP go.  Snake returns, looking a bit like a one-eyed lumberjack.  It takes place 10 years after MGS3 in the 1970s, and Kojima calls this the "true sequel" to the Metal Gear franchise.  He will be writing the script and producing Peace Walker, along with the main Metal Gear team, ensuring it will not be a spin-off or side story.

Kojima also states his intention to include elements utilizing the PSPs unique features.  He also introduces a trailer of Peace Walker.  The video claims this is the "missing link" in the Metal Gear Solid series.  Holy crap, there are multiple Snakes!  And they all have eye patches on!  And why did two of them climb into a cardboard box together?

Due in 2010.

11:57 am

Tretton returns after a brief word from Kaz.  Oh jeez, another Resident Evil spin-off.  Tretton announces Resident Evil Portable, coming to PSP next year.

Other big titles coming to PSP this year include Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, LittleBigPlanet, Shin Megami Tensei, Soul Calibur: Broken Destiny, and other major titles.  Actually, there's just so many flippin' PSP games coming out this year they had to show us a trailer introducing all of them!  Otherwise, we'd probably be stuck here forever.

If you have a PSP and use it for games, you better start saving up.  NOW.  PSN will also be getting major PSOne title, starting with Final Fantasy VII today.

12:05 pm

Now let's talk about Home.  Over 100 virtual items appear on Home each month, with support from various major publishers like Capcom, Namco, and EA.  Here's a quick video to show Home off a bit, which also serves as a creepy reminder that people you see on Home aren't who you might expect in real life.

12:08 pm

Tretton boasts 2009 will be all about new content on PS3.  And there's just so much new content they can't possibly talk about all of it, so he puts on a compilation vid instead -- mostly of multiplayer form games, oddly enough.  Hopefully, they'll actually SHOW some of the exclusives individually, with demos and... stuff.

12:14 pm

Rockstar North develops Agent, exclusive to PlayStation 3, and Tretton hopes it will push the PS3 console.

12:15 pm

Sweet, Assassin's Creed II gameplay!  Trying not to jump out of my seat right now.  Bring on the demo!

We go to the Renaissance now, with a new ancestor.  It is a noble who doesn't start as an assassin, but with the help of allies like Leonardo Di Vinci, he learns quickly.  You'll be able to use the fabled flying machine, making use of fires as updrafts, take out enemies like a hawk on its prey.  There are even more assassination techniques now, making him deadlier than Altair -- double kill with a knife to the face!  There will be 30 more weapons in the game, with extras unlocked on the PSP version.  You can now use smoke bombs to help you disappear.

Expect Assassin's Creed II this holiday season.  Commence fangirl squealing.

12:21 pm

Final Fantasy XIII video from Square Enix, because we haven't seen ten billion of those already.  At least there's some gameplay worked into this one.  Needless to say, the visuals are very pretty, and Summons include a whole new level of interaction.

WHAT?  First footage of Final Fantasy XIV, a PlayStation 3 exclusive!  And it's online?  Yes, this is another Final Fantasy MMO.  That's right, FINAL FANTASY XIV Online is coming to PS3 in 2010.

12:30 pm

Tech demo of the PlayStation Eye and some new motion control capabilities, by Rick Marx and Anton.  One thing's for sure this year: motion control is the big thing in gaming.  Like the Wii Motion Plus, the PS3 motion controller boasts 1:1 tracking, though based on the trouble our demonstrator is having, it could use some work.  The motion controller becomes a tennis racket, a sword, a fan, a flail, flashlight, foam dart gun, yadda yadda.

The controller also has a first-person mode.  Could we be seeing core games on the PlayStation 3 soon with motion control?  On screen, it looks like a demo for some low tech Wii game.  Still, we see some greater possibilities with this technology.  See, Nintendo?  You CAN do cool stuff with motion control!  Maybe they should sit in on Microsoft and Sony conferences more often.

This new feature should launch in Spring 2010.

12:39 pm

More in store for LittleBigPlanet, such as a PSP title and new licensed content, like Disney outfits.  Expect the new content in fall.

Tretton introduces a new franchise from United Front Games, called Mod Nation Racers, another "Play. Create. Share" genre title.  This time, we see the genre expand to racing, a new take on classic kart racing.  You can create your own avatar and upload him for others to play around with.  There's a near-unlimited combination of customization features.

On top of that, you can create your own track with the easy-to-use Track Studio.  You "drive" around to lay down the path, then you can change the road conditions, add mountains, trees, dirt, and other elements.  Hell, you can even build a village around your track, throw in weapons and objects to toss on the track.  Time of day is also changeable, and you can upload your creations onto the PlayStation Network.

12:51 pm

The Last Guardian (previously known as "TRICO") preview!  Sweetness!  And yes, the boy still looks cartoony compared to everything else.

12:56 pm

Teaser trailer of Gran Turismo 5 from Polyphony Digital.

12:58 pm

God of War III, at long last!  Live demo of the final title in the God of War trilogy, in which we'll see how the gods and titans meet their end.  As always, Kratos brutally slaughters anything in his path, whether it be living or undead, a ground-walker or flyer.  As expected, it looked like Devil May Cry with less flash and way more testosterone.

Expect God of War III in March 2010.

1:06 pm

End presentation.

Note: New images and videos will be added in the evening.

Nice job on the coverage of Sony's little deal. Saw plenty of things there, including some excellent customization in Mod Nation Racers.

At first Sony's conference felt kind of weak with a whole lot needless dialogue. But it really started to pick up towards the end. I'm looking forward to GoW3, FF13, FF14, the new Metal Gear, and a couple other things.

I actually really enjoyed Sony's briefing. I'm really torn between MS' and Sony's. I loved the fact that they showed 1) God of War III gameplay and 2) Assassins Creed II game play, especially since the Ubisoft briefing had absolutely no footage. Sony probably had a deal with Ubi, though.

The weird motion controller was pretty impressive, I can't wait to see some actual games based around the technology.

When they announced FFXIV everyone was like "OMG WTF?!" then they displayed the logo and it said "online" and people were like "oh....online" thanks for getting our hopes up.

I have no idea why they make the online FF games still have the chronological number added to the end.....it doesn't make too much sense. But I'm one of the only 3 people in the world who is absolutely thrilled over a new FF MMO. LMAO

    Here's person #2.

Overall, though, it looks like Sony had a good, strong conference.

Just letting you know, that trailer of God of War 3 isn't a E3 trailer. It's the epic scale trailer which was released February 13, but the end part is altered with March 2010 release. I stated it here on the forum too.

Other than that, good stuff guys.
