100$ drop would hit in August
Analysts have been anticipating Sony to cut its console's price quite a while ago and since then rumors have popped up once in a while.
However, according to those same analysts, the console's hardware is still an expensive manufacturing feat, which would explain why Sony has been reluctant to adjust its prices. It seems their plan to deliver cutting edge features isn't exactly what consumers are looking for in this economic climate.
The upcoming cut would be a healthy 100$ and arrive right in time for the Madden 2010 launch in mid-August. With sales expected to drop by up to 17% in May, that price cut might just be what Sony and its developpers need to bring this figure back up.
While sales in the first half of 2009 are definitely going to slightly dip, they are expected to climb by up to 15% in the second half of this year.
As you may have guessed, Sony denies the rumors and rightly so since it would most likely hurt its already dwindling sales.
Considering relatively high Japanese Yen as well, the price cut will not be on the decision table of Sony Computer Entertainment for the next four months or so. But I personally expect a possible price cut before the november Christmas sale season.
According to David Reeves, president of Sony Computer Entertainment, "We're still standing, we're still profitable and there's a lot of fight in us. I don't say we will land a knockout blow, but we're there and we're fighting".
By judging from his courageous comment, price cut is definitely not a first option for profitability of the PS3, they would add more values, (for instance, free two or three new games with another Dualshock 3 controller etc) rather than cutting down the price of console significantly.
And Sony also said before that "if you want Sony products, you have to work hard".
There are dozens of great games out there that attract every genre gamer.
You can be a grown up and clearly state that you are to cheap or perhaps not earn enough to warrant buying this hardware.
Yes it can use a price cut, but it clearly inst a number one option for Sony at this time. I am sure 9 out of 10 people will clearly tell ya that they enjoy their PS3 very much and are glad they purchased it.
As for the rest.. I stand by what I said. Games aren't good enough still (yes they still aren't and it is 2009) and the PS2 needs to be able to be played on it. Ok I guess I miss out. Somehow I'm able to sleep at night knowing this though. Enjoy your PS3. I'll wait till Sony gets a clue if they ever do. They won't be getting my hard earned money any time soon. No sir.
I respect your opinion and you don't even have to respect mine but it aint about being cheap. I got the cash and listed the reasons why I won't get it. Still feel the way I do since my original post and please enjoy your PS3, you paid a lot for it, you best get the most out of it. I'm sure it works well for you. That's all I gotta say now. Laters!!
1. Sony PS3 "is" capable of playing PS2 games. In fact, the first generation PS3's had PS2 hardware built in so that it could be backward compatible with PS2 games. After the bitch and moaning from the western market about how "expensive" PS3 is, Sony did a price slash. The price slash didn't really help, it took away a few USB ports, multi-media card reader, some paint finish, and of course, the PS2 hardware that originally came with the first generation PS3's. Moral of the story is, no matter what you do, you can never truely satisfy the western market, because westerners tend to complain just about anything and everything, good or bad.
1a. Newer generation PS3's without PS2 hardware built in can still play PS2 games, you just need to download the free PS2 emulation software and make sure you check the list of supported games before you play. The software supports majority of the most popular hits on PS2. Probably software rendering is not as good as a built in hardware, but making a false claim such as PS3 doesn't play PS2 games anymore is wrong.
2. PS3 is a over priced Bluray player is just a plain stupid comment. I have yet to see a respectable brand name Blueray player on the market right now that cost less that $200 USD. So essentially, you are getting a top brand name Blueray player for $200, and "the" best (in terms of quality) gaming console that is currently out on the market for an additional $200. I'm pretty sure that the PS3 is more powerful than your mom's E-Machine that cost $399.00 at Bestbuy.
3. Many game titles doesn't make or break a game console. A game console could have 20,000 titles, so what, how many of them are truly worth buying? Just two titles, MGS4 and FFXIII Versus is enough reason for me to buy a PS3. The Dev teams barely tapped into the full potential of the PS3, which means the future game titles coming out for PS3 will only get better, not worse. PS3 engines are hard to work with for game developers, but please do not confuse that with the quality of PS3 hardware.
The point is, a Ferrari is a Ferrari. Should we lower the price on the Ferrari's because the economy is bad? Should we remove some of the top features on what makes a Ferrari stand out from most other cars just so that it could be more affordable? To me, these things are considered luxury items, lowering the price tag by reducing their features is not a smart move. Instead, I agree with bundle packs to better promote the machine. Put in an extra controller, bundle it with 1 or 2 greatest hits and you'll increase your sales figures for sure.
I'm no Sony fan, and I'm not a Microsoft fan. I own both game consoles, and so far, my X360 gave out twice once on 3 red rings and once on E73. It's always a smarter investment move to go with a better quality and more reliable product.
Just my 2 pennies worth.
Dude that has the be the biggest generalization I've read in at least 2 weeks. Maybe even 3.
I wouldn't mind a price drop...just more reason to buy one and Mets...there are plenty of good games already/upcoming. Some of them aren't exclusive but they are good, here is my list:
Dark Void (maybe PC), DC Universe Online (maybe PC), The Agency (maybe PC), inFamous, MGS, Killzone 1+2, Resistance 1+2, White Knight Chronicles, Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted 1+2, Assassins Creed, FFXIII...
