Millions will lose their signal
The transition to digital television has been going on quite a while, but many still haven't jumped ship yet.
As you most likely remember from the vast advertising campaigns, the original deadline to shutdown all analog television broadcasts in favor of digital was February 17th. In early February, the United States' Congress had decided to push back the date to June 12th because there was apparently 6.5 million households still not ready for the switch.
After issuing nearly 2 billion dollars worth of vouchers for analog to digital converter boxes, over 10% of the 114 million households still aren't prepared. This number hardly makes sense considering that means there would be less people ready now than back in February, but you get the idea.
Interestingly enough, large cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Boston are among the areas who will suffer most from the transition. New York alone has about 92 000 unprepared homes.
However, Obama has clearly stated that "there will not be another delay". Thus, whoever isn't ready by Friday this week will simply not be able to watch TV anymore. That should bring some interesting business for electronics shops from people who have no idea what is going on.
Of course, sales figure show that many were prepared back in February. In fact, sales of digital televisions had gone up by over 30% compared to last year.
