Atlus breaks into PS2 top 10 with Devil Summoner 2, while Capcom's Bionic Commando doesn't even register on the radar

X-Men Origins tears up NPD platform-specific May software charts behind UFC Image 1

NPD's latest industry sales report for May helped confirm UFC: Undisputed as last month's top-selling multiplatform game, despite the industry's overall dip in revenue. Further breakdown of their sales reports by platform now show that X-Men Origins: Wolverine Uncaged actually did quite well across different consoles, often breaking into the top five, if not topping the platform's charts altogether as was the case for the PS2 and PSP.  PS3 exclusive Infamous put the drop on Wolverine, while the ol' Canucklehead never saw action on Nintendo's platforms.  In the case of the Wii, exergaming titles continued to do very well, while Cooking Mama's green thumb, Professor Layton's comeback, Lego Star Wars and of course Rhythm Heaven did their part in shaking up a somewhat predictable DS chart.

A pleasant surprise for Atlus fans is the appearance of Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon as the third best-selling PS2 game for May.  The game was hailed as a real treat for action RPG fans, and the swanky limited edition bundle certainly didn't hurt!

Publisher Capcom unfortunately faced less pleasant news with the relatively poor sales of the new Bionic Commando game for PS3 and Xbox 360.  The Grin-developed third-person action adventure, based on Capcom's classic game franchise, sold only 27,000 units across both platforms during the final two week reporting period for May.  As a result, Bionic Commando failed to place in both NPD's top 10 multiplatform and platform-specific monthly software sales ranking charts.  Bionic Commando: Rearmed, the high-res remake of the original game released for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Store, in comparison managed to sell over 130,000 units during its first week alone.  While this isn't necessarily an indication that digitally distribution is far better for modernizing classic Capcom game franchises, Bionic Commando's retail performance (coupled with its mixed reviews) ought to weigh on the publisher.

The same reason Madden NFL(Insert year here) is one of the best selling games every year, and has firmly cemented itself as a cash cow. You are catering to certain people that will buy the game just to play as their favorite fighters. MMA is taking off, so even if the games are bad, the sales will represent the popularity.
