No records were broken, but Mature titles are still profitable
Rejoice, Wii owners, for publisher SEGA has decided to continue publishing Mature games for the Nintendo console.
Gary Dunn of SEGA Europe notes that while none of their "hardcore" Wii titles have broken sales records, they have all proven profitable enough to put money in the bank, ensuring there are still funds for more 18+ games.
"House of the Dead: Overkill was a profitable title for us," Dunn said. In fact, the game received fairly positive feedback as a well-made Wii shooter, but sales didn't exactly spike upon release.
"Whilst it had a rather sharp tail at full price, they do bubble away at a lower price point for a long time. You get your money back and a bit on full price, but over the years, if we do the final product return on investment, profits come from the lower price point."
Similarly, MADWORLD shook things up with its stylish art and excessive brutality. Again, SEGA was lauded by the gaming media for taking this bold step forward. Once again, we see mediocre sales, but like Overkill, the numbers have been gradually creeping up over time.
Dunn is perfectly content with this because the profit is still notable.
"You have to push boundaries and explore. I think whilst MADWORLD commercially didn't sell what we were expecting I wouldn't say it's game over for mature Wii titles from SEGA," he explained.
"We're taking a look at the resources we have now. We've got money to invest in development, we're just considering where to invest it next."
