Bethesda celebrates Elder Scrolls' 15th anniversary with free Daggerfall

Plus: a retrospective with designer Todd Howard

There was a time, young ones, when games didn't have "textures", "Dolby Digital sound" or any of that fancy stuff. But damn did they have great atmosphere and stories. The Elder Scrolls Chapter II: Daggerfall comes from that era, and having just hit its 15th anniversary, Bethesda Softworks, the game's creator, despite saying previously it would not happen, has re-released the game, and for free!

You can download it here, along with The Elder Scrolls: Arena too, if you wish (this was put out previously). Note DOSBox and some technical know-how will be required to get it to run on any recent operating system, though there is a detailed guide (PDF) to help -- shouldn't be too bad.

Further on that, designer Todd Howard has written up a Daggerfall retrospective for Gamespy -- have a look here.

And if you have no idea what we're talking about, but happen to like Oblivion, Fallout 3, or anything remotely related, check out the trailer below and get to know your roots!

I tried playing the first game, but quit when I couldn't figure out the first dungeon! I was thinking that if the entire game is gonna be like this, I'm not gonna like it. I respect the game for it's roots in gaming history though.

Daggerfall doesn't look bad, and I would want to play it, if I hadn't heard about all of the crappy glitches. Have they fixed any of the bugs in Daggerfall yet?

They should have reserved some bandwidth before putting this online. Downloading at 8kB/s? Come on, guys.

Awesome been looking for Daggerfall for quite some time ever since I downloaded the demo from Fileplanet. Though the comment about players liking the game after playing Oblivion/Fallout 3 is a bit far fetched. Well majority of players might like it but generally most people that play Oblivion and Fallout 3 are only playing for the graphics.

I remember referring 40 people to Morrowind and only 5 played it for more than a week, the other 35 couldn't get past the 2002 style graphics, so to see them play a game from 94-98 won't be happening
