More designs and colors available after September 15

With the Xbox 360 soon to be getting more Zune compatible features, Microsoft's Zune HD is now available for pre-order.

You can only pre-order the Zune HD in black or platinum right now.  While both are lovely colors, if you're looking for something a bit brighter, there will be 10 "exclusive" designs and five different colors available to choose from after September 15, when the Zune HD is released.

Features

  • touchscreen - Get quick and instant access to your content with multi-touch navigation. With a 3.3 inch screen and vivid 16:9 OLED display (480x272 resolution), premium entertainment is at your fingertips.

  • HD Radio - Tune into all your favorite stations with crystal clear reception. With an integrated HD Radio receiver, you can access a variety of HD Radio stations at no additional cost. Plus, tag the songs you like for later purchase.

  • HD video out - Watch supported 720p HD movies, TV shows and videos in high definition on your HDTV through the Zune HD & AV Dock (sold separately). Or take them with you for premium entertainment on the go.

  • wireless - Connect, update, and buy content wirelessly from Wi-Fi hot spots. Stream millions of songs over Wi-Fi directly to your Zune HD and turn it into a portable digital jukebox.

  • web browser - Surf the web anytime, anywhere you have a Wi-Fi connection. Enjoy your favorite websites with a full-featured web browser including tap to zoom technology, built-in accelerometer, and touchscreen QWERTY keyboard.

For first-gen Zune owners like myself, the Zune HD is quite an upgrade.  It's currently available for pre-order at Amazon.com, the Microsoft Store, Walmart and Best Buy.

Wtf? It sounded like they were describing an iPod touch in the features section with the exception of HD radio.

Isn't the Zune seen as an epic phail to most of the music lovers in the world, though?
I think what you mean to say is that Apple really revolutionized how we view portable media players, so iPods are all we hear / think about when we hear "mp3 player." By that logic, any music device not made by Apple would be "epic phail."

Also, I think your use of "music lovers" is inappropriate to your comment. That is a really broad phrase spanning multiple continents and cultures, many of which may not even know what an mp3 player is. Though I think the "music lovers" you refer to wouldn't be as concerned about the brand of their mp3 player beyond reason. I consider myself a music lover, and I've tried Sony, Apple, and Microsoft players. More than anything, I prefer the stereo system in my car.

I would like a Zune HD myself, but I'll probably wait to hear how it does first -- see if it has any issues based on user reviews. My first-gen Zune player works just fine anyway.

TBH I HATE the ipod. the reason it was so great and is still highly regarded is that it was a harddrive MP3 player with large ammounts of capacity compared to what flash based MP3 players were available at the time. They did nothing innovative, made you install INVASIVE resource hogging PoS software, and didn't sound any better. The Zune works with WMP, winAMP, jukebox, and many other syncable computer based entertainment options. The ipod has issues with them, syncing fine, but not recognizing music. Also with all the different audio formats out there, I think it's stupid to have itunes re-encode the music to aac and store a SECOND copy on your computer. WTF, isn't it a MP3 players? Why do I need an MP3 and AAC version of the same damned song? Apple did nothing good except include a damned hard drive. Hell I have an MP3 player that puts them to shame, my computer! Apple learned it's lesson (after a lawsuit settled out of court), and several generations. AND IT STILL SUCKS! I have many gripes about the ipod. Microsoft learned from Apples mistakes and put out a decent MP3 player that people quite simply put down cause they thought it was a PoS ipod clone. In fact most people who put it down haven't tried it, and probably won't. I actually sold 500 zunes in a six month period because we had two displays, one of a Zune and one of an ipod. After trying them both, 99% chose the Zune. Granted hte Zune has had it's shares of problems. But when 2/3 of the reviews called it a failed ipod clone, they completely missed the point and went in with a bias. This is the same thing that happened with vista. Congratulations sheeple, yet again you have failed.

Why am I what I am? Because I REFUSE to listen to other people and believe them before I find the facts and make my own decision. You could tell me cancer was the fountain of youth, and it could be true, but until I find something that proves it, I don't give a crud. I have tried an Ipod(every generation, update, and everything) and still don't like them. I have, and am proud to have, a Zune. I can also say quite a few bad things about the zune, but this rant is over.

Personally if the Zune connected to my car stereo I would've got one. Because my ex-gf had a 80gb Zune and I used it for a while and it was nice. I now have a 120gb iPod and it works. But I have to use MediaMonkey because iTunes likes to freeze on Windows 7. But definitely Zune 120 vs iPod 120gb, Zune wins hands down except for the car compatibility issue.

What somebody really needs to release is a modular, open source media player. e.g. a wi-fi chip which can added and removed at will. You could sell the base model cheap and make money by selling aftermarket extras such as the aforementioned wi-fi chip. I could see this being very popular if the base model was made cheap enough.
