Dropping long-used GTX, GT, and G suffixes
According to website Digitimes, Nvidia is planning to change up their naming scheme over the next few months.
It appears that new video cards will only be known by a number -- no longer will there be any GS, GT, GTX models of cards.
The use of the 'G's goes back a number of years now, as either a prefix or a suffix, in Nvidia's naming conventions. For example: the 6600GT, or the GTX 260.
Having reached the 9000 series in the naming convention this year, Nvidia transitioned into a three-digit identifying number for their current generation of video cards. So, according to the rumour, the next generation of video cards (thought to be arriving in Q4) will be named GeForce 360, GeForce 380, and etcetra.
Meanwhile AMD/ATI still has a long time to go before they'll have to change their naming conventions. ATI's next generation of cards -- thought to be arriving sometime sooner than Nvidia's -- will be the HD 5xxx series.
Now there is dual core GPU's thats another potential name in the already confusing naming systems, they have to work out better lists for the not so tech savvy people out there.
Geforce 360 doesn't sound any better then Geforce 260 GTS something has to be changed and they have some names to toss in the mix now.
That is a good point about the dual-GPU cards. Hopefully they've figured something out well in advance
