After the earlier news of GRIN Studios' closure, most of us assumed their Final Fantasy title, codenamed Fortress, would have gotten the axe as well by Square Enix. Not so, according to anonymous sources close to both companies -- the actual status sees Square Enix themselves taking on the reins.

While the concept art was nothing short of striking, the publishing and developing giant, at six months in, was apparently unhappy with the game's progress, specifically its quality. The sources noted this situation was "central" to GRIN's closure.

One could assume Square Enix taking on the project will make for a better work in the end, then, though perhaps not one with the breath of fresh air we feel the series needs.
