Wall Street abuzz with rumors

[Updated] Microsoft rumored to buy Electronic Arts Image 1

Insiders tend to have loose lips, and this latest leak is causing quite a stir.  There are now rumors that Microsoft may be buying (or considering, at the very least) Electronic Arts.

That's right, Electronic Arts -- Command & Conquer, Burnout, Need for Speed, every sports game on the planet, crappy movie-based games, everything.  Needless to say, the suits are all over this one, and EA stock went up 8.1 percent.  Microsoft saw a 1.1 gain, while THQ grew a whopping 13 percent; rumors speculate THQ may be the true target of the yet-unconfirmed takeover.

Some analysts are dismissing these rumors completely.

"Our contacts just don't see Microsoft buying Electronic Arts, no synergies whatsoever, and also not Microsoft's corporate primary focus right now," commented Trip Chowdhry, an analyst at Global Equities Research.

New York's WhatsTrading.com options strategist Frederic Ruffy stated, "There's talk that Microsoft might be interested in acquiring Electronic Arts. It's unsubstantiated chatter, but it's out there."

Update: Looks like the news are just rumors after all.  A Microsoft spokesperson told us the company "no plans to purchase Electronic Arts."  We're currently waiting on a response from EA.

I really hope that this doesn't happen. I don't mind the EA of today, they produce quality titles unlike a few years ago, but Microsoft? No thanks!

lol would this mean the ps3 wouldn't get anymore sports games and the need for speed and burnout series would be PC and Xbox 360 exclusive?

Wouldn't be surprised if 2K Sports then signed a deal with Sony.

They both have their good games and bad, but the idea of these two giants merging creeps me out. Koei and Tecmo, Square Enix and Eidos, Activision and Blizzard... ugh.

I wouldn't mind quite as much if the mergers made any sense -- most of them don't.

It's my guess that %80+ of game development will be run by 2 or 3 conglomerates within 5 years. That's just the way it seems to be going.

I don't think it's possible, no matter how much money Bill shoves in to EAs faces, they know they can make much much more off of what they have already. And how many people out there would hate seeing dante's Inferno and Dead Space becoming a 360 exclusive? Yeah, I don't think anybody would be happy then.

From what perspective are you look at them, though? From a consumer or business POV?

As stated, EA stands to make more of a profit in the long run by releasing on all available platforms without restrictions. Game-exclusives are always an option for Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft, as they are all keenly aware of.
