Sales are up, but will the party last?

PSP sales up 300% thanks to PSPgo Image 1

Just the few days after launch, Sony's PSPgo has boosted US PSP platform sales a whopping 300 percent. SCEA (Sony Computer Entertainment America) says that the PSPgo launch on October 1 has provoked a "significant increase" in North American PlayStation Network revenue.

SCEA corporate communications director Patrick Seybold stated, "The launch of PSP Go has generated strong consumer interest in the overall PSP platform and the PlayStation Network's digital content offering."

This is great news for Sony, who has frequently trailed Nintendo in the handheld department. According to the company, the sales boost à la launch is "in line with expectations."

Sony also hopes to keep the momentum up by backing their latest handheld with several blockbuster games, most notably: LittleBigPlanet and Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines.

Of course there is a significant increase in PSN revenue. You pay $250.00 for the system and then you need to dish out even more just to play a game because UMD games don't work on it and you can't convert your old UMD games over (at least in North America). The PSPgo is just a large FU to those who already have a PSP and a UMD collection. It may have done well the first couple weeks but I see it falling behind like usual to Nintendo.
