No matter how you look at it, game-to-movie adaptations tend to fail horribly. There are a few exceptions, though I can't think of any off the top of my head; anyway, the King of Fighters live-action flick won't be so lucky.
Images first popped up in June, and a trailer has been circulating the net since then. It's a behind-the-scenes look at the movie with commentary from director and staff. Listening to the creators usually gives us a deeper insight into the project, often resulting in greater appreciation. That's not the case here.
Liberties have been taken, like that skinny British Rugal with a cigar and fedora. Apparently Terry Bogard works for the CIA and joins the tournament to investigate this "secret society." Bogard's actor, David Leitch, casually boasts, "If you like video games, you're going to like this film." We're pretty sure that's a fib.
If you're a King of Fighters fan, this movie isn't for you, and the trailer alone may be enough to send bad chills down your spine. Feel free to hit the "Pause" button any time...
By normal movie standards, I think this movie looks a touch weak, but could be good in a cheesy way. By video game movie standards, I think this movie looks pretty good. By fighting video game movie standards, I think this movie looks promising.
Come'on guys! It's at least 15x better looking than the last Street Fighter movie was.
Jean-Claude Van Damme's Street Fighter movie was not so popular despite the popularity of the game series....
For this King of Fighter movie, I suppose, it'll be only shortly suitable for hardcore KOF fans and of course for those weird folks who want to make worse-than-B-movies genre by copying famous games...

Hardcore fans are the ones upset by the complete disregard for the characters and terrible Hollywood storyline adapted to it. Don't try to slap people who care about the series in with people who would support such a pile of a movie.
What makes it automatically crap is the same generic story for every game / niche movie. Fast and the Furious used it, Torque used it, Street Fighter used it, Mortal Kombat used it.
There's an actual KOF story but apparently none of the folks making the movie wanted to pay attention to it and on top of that they wanted to bring in the most ill-selected cast they could find. Mai fans are going to be crying at night at how they picked the complete inverse of the character they idolized. Terry fans are going to wonder what a guy well past his prime is even attempting to fill the shoes. I wont even touch Kyo or Iori and anything else, it's just a moving tragedy.
As a generic movie I'm sure it might pass as decent to some, but if that's the case don't call it King of Fighters.
Side scrollers/fighting games should not be movies. I don't believe I got a plot playing street fighter 2, yet it got a movie. Maybe its because they are all LIVE ACTION. Maybe they'd fair better in CGI, like the Resident evil(japanese ones) and FF movies
0 thumbs!
