SEGA finally announces delay of RPG Alpha Protocol Image 1

SEGA finally released a press release declaring Alpha Protocol as no-show for its intended October release date. The official press release announcement comes after last week's changing of the release date on the website, and last month's expectation that the game was going to be late.

Unfortunately for fans of the game, no release date has been pinned down besides 'Spring 2010.'

According to Masanao Maeda, SEGA President and COO, the game has been delayed in order to improve it:

"Since the inception of Alpha Protocol, SEGA has recognized the potential for the game to establish itself as an AAA title.  We’ve worked in conjunction with Obsidian Entertainment in making the decision to move Alpha Protocol’s ship date to spring 2010 to ensure that we have the best game possible at launch."

Spy-themed RPG Alpha Protocol (but arguably better classified as an ARPG) is being made by Obsidian Entertainment for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. Though Obsidian is generally well-regarded as a RPG maker, they have had a somewhat rough track record when it comes to buggy releases. Perhaps this extra amount of polish will really help the game out. However the title will now be going up against Splinter Cell: Conviction and Mass Effect 2, amongst others, making a successful Spring release potentially more challenging.

In an unofficial forum post concerning the delay announcement, Obsidian PR and marketing guy Matthew Rorie said:

"The game is going to get a good coat of polish to it, and it's also hopefully going to become more visible to the gaming community at large. So that's a win-win for everyone. It sucks that it won't be coming out for a while, but it'll be awesome when it does."

I wonder at what point a game manufacturer get's concerned that constant delays will end up hurting the product when it finally does go to market. Alpha Protocol is now off my radar. When it comes out, if I buy it, I will buy it used. That means profit will go only to the retailer, and Obsidian won't benefit from my purchase. I am amazed that they waited until the product was supposed to come out, to announce the delay. A little PR could go a long way towards making the fans feel better about their products. They may not owe them that, but it sure makes sense if your strategy is to later try and convince them to part with their money.

I'm torn on this one. I think it's always better to delay a game and make it great than release one that is buggy. Often a game's success is determined in the final 5% of the project, in my view.

On the other hand, it is a shame they could not finish it on time. Now would be a perfect time for release -- there is hardly any competition in RPGs. Right around the corner Borderlands and Dragon Age are coming out and then there'll be tons more competition.

Not that I care about graphics much, but alpha Protocol has already been getting flak for somewhat older looking graphics, and this might just get worse if they release another 6 -8 months down the road. (I imagine they'll be polishing and improving stuff and fixing bugs, but won't be enhancing the graphics much.)

Whatever happens though personally I'm really looking forward to this game.

Another delay? This game was coming along nicely around February time, so I had at least expected it to release for the holiday season. Oh well, at least SEGA can make sure it's a polished experience this way...

I was going to buy it. Then it was delayed - I was still going to buy it this time. Now they want to delay it to improve it, wait - it isn't sounding like it is worth the $60 after waiting to get it in March, then October, now mid next year - I will rent or buy it used. I am not going to buy a game they need to "polish" - which makes me think of polished turd to make it seem better, not be better.
