Extended lifespan possible, says Asmussen
God of War III (GoW III), one of Sony's most anticipated flagship titles is due for launch next year. The series is best known for its fast-paced combat system and its insane brutality which sees the game's protagonist, Kratos, severing masses of limbs and even ripping heads off with his bare hands. Fans of the series will also know the game is set to be the end of the road for the trilogy, or at least for Kratos, but SCE Santa Monica hope to extend the lifespan of the final installment.
Challenge rooms have become common within the series, pitting players against relentless hordes of enemies to claw their way to the top. Now, with so many new mechanics in the third game, the team hope they can convey these new gameplay elements into making dozens more. When asked about the possibility of them in God of War III, game director Stig Asmussen had this to say:
"It would make a lot of sense to be able to download them. That's something we might see in the future. So, maybe you'll see the game ship with a certain amount of challenges on it, then later on, we might put a download pack out with new challenges. It's a good way to keep the series going."
Later on within the interview, Stig also details how challenge rooms have been one of the last stages of development whilst making GoW games. God of War III will be available from Spring 2010, only on the PlayStation 3.
