But fellow Labour Party MP leaps to defense of gaming after MW2's airport footage goes under the spotlight
The controversial in-game footage of an undercover mission involving a terrorist attack on an airport continues to land Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in hot water. Activision and Infinity Ward's latest CoD shooter just can't seem to catch a break even with its release across multiple territories nearly upon us, and the latest flashpoint is in the United Kingdom's Parliament.
Labour MP for Leicester East, Keith Vaz, denounced the portrayal of violence as displayed in the aforementioned airport footage during Parliament, and asked if the government had any measures in place to prevent MW2's sale to minors. Culture Media and Sport Minister, Sion Simon, countered by reminding the MP that MW2 was already properly labeled as a certificate 18 game for age-ratings.
However, it's also within the Labour party that gamers have an ally in the form of MP for West Bromwich East, Tom Watson. In response to Vaz's criticism of MW2 in the Daily Mail, Watson has set up a Facebook group dubbed the "Gamers' Voice". Priding itself as being "unashamedly pro-video games", the group intends to provide UK gamers with an additional outlet from which they can "find their voice in newspapers and government".
The group is proving more popular than Watson realized, garnering over 3,900 members hours after being established. This support is heartening for Watson, who envisions the "pressure group" as "a game-changing move for Parliament". According to Watson:
"There is a legitimate debate about how you handle difficult content. What we’ve really got to do is educate these young MPs to realise the scale of the industry and the cultural significance of the industry, because they’ve just had three years of Keith battering on about the industry, about the content."It would be better for this House to support the many thousands of games designers and coders and the many millions of games users, rather than collaborating with the Daily Mail to create moral panic over the use of videogames."
Chalk it up to more buzz that MW2 managed to generate even outside of the PC multiplayer fiasco! MW2 remains set for launch at the stroke of midnight, opening the floodgates for what could be the gaming industry's biggest opening day release yet.
