The Burj Dubai is now the world's tallest building

Building to be classified as a 'mega-high rise'

If you have a fear of heights, you might want to avoid the Burj Dubai -- once completed, the tower will have 160 floors, and will almost reach a half  of a mile, into the sky.

Over the weekend, the Burj Dubai (burj is the arabic word for tower) became the world's tallest tower. The Burj Dubai is now a few meters higher than the 508 meter tall Taipei 101 tower, which was, since 2004, the world's tallets tower. Construction of the Burj tower is expected to wrap up around the end of 2008.

Construction of the United Arab Emirate's Burj Dubai only began in 2004. The entire structure is worth about a billion dollars, and was financed by a consortium lead by Samsung Corporation. Construction of the tower is rapid. At times, floors have been built in periods as short as three days. Most of the labor for the project has been supplied by Indian immigrants, working around the clock for no standard minimum wage, in the desert heat of Dubai.

The tower is going to boast 56 elevators, ultra-luxurious apartments, spas, boutiques, the first Giorgio Armani-edition hotel, a observation platform on the 124th floor, four big swimming pools, a 15,000 square foot gym, a library, restaurants, a Cigar Club smoking lounge, offices, and residential units.

The tower's water system is designed to supply a 946,000 liters of water a day. Additionally, the tower will have one of the world's most extensive building cooling system, to keep things comfortable. All those air conditioners will be needed, because at peak capacities, it is estimated that as many as 35,000 people might be in the tower at once.

Nope. It's the world's tallest high-rise building. The world's tallest man-made structure and tallest tower is the KVLY-TV mast near Fargo, North Dakota.

Well, we can really split hairs here, concerning what qualifies as a tower, and what does not etc. From one perspective you are correct.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_buildings_and_structures_in_the_world

But irregardless, once thing this is built, it will be taller than the KVLY mast tower.

However, you do have I point.. so I'm going to change the headline from 'tower' to 'skyscraper'. Thanks for your input...

According to Dream Homes WorldWide the Emirate has also already registered the ‘tallest residential building in the world’ record with the Guinness Book of Records, for the Princess Tower in Dubai Marina, even though it’s not yet built?

Um, Princess Tower? [consults Internet] Ah, the Princess Tower.

The PT is one mondo tower but the Burj will be the mondo-est. It is already taller than the Princess.

I just feel sorry for the many Bothans that died to bring this information to light.

Wonder how it fares against the wind up thar. Can tell ya one thing, many loons are going to love hopping offa' that thing. Hopefully the kind that use parachutes, or those groovy flying squirrel getups.

Those 'groovy flying squirrel getups' still have parachutes...

But jeez, half a mile high? I bet they had some issue with compensating for the wind...

How long do you reckon this will be the tallest skyscraper/building though?

Ya, wind is a problem, for sure. But they planned for it, and this building has an incredibly reinforced foundation.

Your right tallteen, it'll probably only be the worlds tallest for a little a while. However, at this point, nobody else has planned or started building anything taller.

Wind is now *the* problem (or rather, the most significant limiting factor) for buildings that aim to break height records. The setbacks of the Burj (where the floor size decreases) were designed to generate wind resistance forces that minimize the oscillation of the building. It was just about conceived with a wind tunnel in mind.

WHHOOAA!! wind is really busting the tower!!!an associate of a friend of mine.....went there, he'd reach 88th floor only and can't stand the vibration(sway).... the solution would be a MECHANICAL TUNED MASS DAMPER...?!?
