And up to 32GB of RAM

Specifications for the new Mac Pro have been released: and it appears this machine is going to have a little bit of processing power handy.

A pair of Intel 45-nano, 12MB L2 cache'd, quad core 5400 series Xeon processors are going to supply 8 cores of parellel CPU power, running at speeds up to 3.2 GHz. The Mac Pro will also support up to a (whopping) 4 TB of interal storage, and 32GB of 800 MHz DDR2 ECC FB-DIMM RAM.

“The new Mac Pro is the fastest Mac we’ve ever made,” according to Philip Schiller, an Apple Product Marketing guy. “With 3.2 GHz 8-core Xeon processing, a 1600 MHz front side bus and 800 MHz memory, the new Mac Pro uses the fastest Intel Xeon architecture on the market.”

Standard with the Mac Pro is also a HD 2600 XT -- but the system can handle up to 4 video cards.

The price for all this power is around $2700, for 2.8 GHz model. And that's without a monitor. You can read more about this fancy new Mac here.

.... Why? Who would need that much power?

There only 2 kinds of people that would need this, people who are in need of a multimedia power house, or someone who needs a freaking huge server. That's about it. I still would not use this for gaming.

I'd use it for gameing, no prob, as long as it isn't a mac.

For that price the LEAST they could do is have a decent graphics card in there. Again Apple come up with expensive loads of rubbish

8 cores is currently too much power for %95 of people out there (ya, just making that number up...but somewhere around there.)

Games hardly take advantage of multi-core proc's, and it is difficult to even stress a 4 core machine with regular, simultaneous running apps.

But you know, some people just like getting the best, so we have stuff like this powerhouse machine.

But seeing at Mac's are predominately aimed at gfx and multimedia creation and 3d etc, the cpu's and ram need to be stupidly good, you try real time rendering on a gaming pc and see what happens lol.

^^oh yeah, for sure. If you're like a professional animator or something then go for it. I'm just saying for most people, this would be more power than they need.

Well, ordinary home users do not need that much power-based computer. Simply becasue they need to watch their energy bills carefully. Although Apple incorporates state-of-the-art technologies with this new mighty machine they still can't effectively reduce their products' CO2 emission rate and energy consumption rate!!! I want under 10W energy Consumption rate for all future comptuer related technoliges!!! Can they really make that kind of new technology, I don't think so, at least for a while!!

10W? You might be waiting a while

Though the industry is moving in the right direction.

It would be quite nice to have a computer run at 10W. You could just turn a dynamo and it would create that much, pretty useful for a laptop.

Nice to see they're updating to keep up with the workstation industry. Tyan and others have been doing similar boards for a while now.
