Modder Ben Heck makes a PS3 to go
A modding wizard by the name of Benjamin J. Heckendorn has been busy in his workshop, putting the finishing touches on a portable PS3. Having used his knowledge gained from building a Wii and Xbox portable, the PS3 portable took about a year and a half to build.
Here are some of the details:
- Original backwards compatible 60GB model
- 17-inch LCD HDTV screen: 720p
- HDMI-DVI connection
- Built-in keyboard, USB ports, stereo speakers, headphone jack
- Size: 17 x 13.75 x 3-inches
- Weight: 16 pounds
'Ben Heck' as he is known, made this is in partnership with the website Engadget. This unique PS3 is going to be going up for auction to raise money for charity.
Incredibly mod job though, I've been seeing a lot of articles on the topic of console modding lately and I'm amazed at what you can do.
um...because it's a *laptop* and you have to put it on your lap? With the heat from that thing in close proximity to...yeah...it'd make you sterile, as in you're not gonna have kids; He didn't mean it as in bacteria. Not to mention it could probably burn you quite a lot unless Benjamin J. Heckendorn compensated with good enough cooling. Laptops, as far as I know and have heard, can get quite hot with all the components crammed so close to each other, so cooling is a problem with laptops. The PS3 is meant to be stationary and, as such, isn't restrained in it's size. Given that, they don't have to worry about giving the system large fans and vents. With a laptop, you can't fit all of that in without making it too big (although that laptop is a monster). Furthermore, the PS3 has performance hardware and, besides the immense powerdraw, generates a *lot* of heat. With the small fans they choose to use you won't be able to move enough air. You're not gonna have the air you *can* move vented up towards you from where the keyboard is, besides the fact that it would be blocked by the screen when closed. You don't want to direct the air down onto the user's legs (lap and, hence, their crotch) either. That leaves the back side and the sides to the left and right of the user. As we all (should) know, those dimensions don't leave much space to vent heat from, especially if that space is further taken up from expansion slots, optical drives, media drives, etc.
