Unauthorized unplayable Oblivion mod makes for an interesting video

When Elder Scrolls Oblivion came out, it brought many PC's to their knees with the game's then-next-gen excellent graphics.

A person interested in Crysis, Oblivion and modding wondered what it would be like to see one of his favorite games updated to run in the CryEngine 2, which powers Crysis. So the guy -- his name is Salenger -- got to work, and transferred some of the art objects from Oblivion into the powerful Crysis engine.

He does not plan to make a playable mod or anything -- he just made it out of curiosity. Hopefully he will not be sued or anything, because this video is pretty neat:

If only they made a full-conversion mod of Oblivion to CryEngine 2 which allowed you to run around with a rifle in a nano-suit, shooting dwarves and wolves and zombies and such -- then we'd have a real game on our hands.

Isn't CryEngine 2 their next engine coming out for Blue Mars? With that photo realistic shader.

    And Crysis was CryEngine?

    forgive my ingorance kspeiss.

    I guess I'm confused overall, see: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/199922.html

This is their next generation engine, yet it's named Cryengine 2 that powered Crysis? It's clearly way superior to Crysis lol

Wow, just wow! Why can't I play Oblivion like that!?

And he wouldn't get sued unless he distributed something like that, right?

Well Bruce, Oblivion has better art direction, couple that with the CryEngine 2 You get something that puts Crysis to shame.

    bruceleethree:

That video's quality is terrible. Here's the original link from IGN:

    http://pc.ign.com/dor/articles/864986/cryengine-2-tech-demo/videos/GDC_2008_teapots.html

The video showcases Crytek's newest *addition* to the Cryengine2: The photo-realistic renderer. Remember, Crytek isn't gonna just drop the Cryengine2 after Crysis. Just as all the other developers, such as Epic and Valve, they're improving their engine with more features and refinements. As for their next engine, it's not in any form you could play something on. At the moment, only a few developers are on that, if not one person, since everyone else is still working on and maintaining their current engine.

Farcry was Crytek's first game, which ran on the Cryengine. It was one of the first games which required a gig of RAM. The graphics were awesome at the time though: The *entire* island was loaded into the RAM and, with the draw distances capable, you could take a sniper rifle and look far across it.

!!! Now I want a new Elder Scrolls! But I have to wait for Fallout 3 first, which is very bitter sweet.
