Valve catches achievement command exploit

Team Fortress 2 goes to hell for two days

Valve catches achievement command exploit Image 1

We were pretty excited when we learned about Valve's big update for Team Fortress 2 that would add new Medic achievements and weapons.  Fine, maybe only I was excited about it.

And how many of you guessed that Valve would somehow screw this up big time?  Very good, because you guys were correct.

This is the story of how Valve destroyed the TF2 natural order in merely two days.

April 29, Day 1 - Valve releases update, adding new Medic achievements to TF2.  The update killed my bandwidth, interrupting my GTA IV fun.  So maybe it was a bad idea for my roommate and I to try updating at the same time, but anyway...  The game is now flooded with Medics as players scramble to unlock the new achievements, not realizing that a team with no other classes can't efficiently deal out damage and win against a team that does appreciate balance.

This is quite annoying because I found myself forced to play as something else when I'm the one with 9 hours on a Medic (and less than an hour on the other classes).  Maybe I don't play TF2 like a gaming addict, but I play a Medic religiously; now suddenly, every joker decides they want to be a healing class?  Medic mayhem!

The best part of all this is that at some point, someone figured out that he did not need to actually earn any achievements.  The new update had somehow added an exploit in which players could simply type in commands to unlock the achievements and the three new weapons.  By the end of the day, many gamers were using these commands, whether to cheat or just out of curiosity.

April 30, Day 2 - Valve caught on and churned out a new update to fix the exploits.  Here is the update news directly from the Steam website:

Team Fortress 2 Client

  • Removed TF2 achievement console commands

Team Fortress 2 Server

  • Fixed clients being able to trigger sv_soundscape_printdebuginfo on the server
  • Fixed potential "nuke" exploit in rcon subsystem

Valve has made an attempt to further resolve this problem by rolling back, removing achievements from those who used the commands.  On the Steam forums, some have complained about losing all their achievements from the roll back, even the ones earned legitmately.  Others have yet to feel the wrath of Valve and are still running around with their Milestone weapons.

If you want to update to actually take effect, it's suggested that you restart Steam.  However, many of the community discussions suggest that Valve's problems are far from over - there will be much work ahead.

I'll be holding my breath for more updates, hoping that Valve will effectively address these issues.

Some of the achievements are ridiculous, and damn near impossible to obtain.

I'd rather just have the damn weapons right away so I can play the full game I paid for. (Which should have had class weapons to begin with)

Agreed, Bruce.

I feel that the achievements on their own are alright, but the weapons shouldn't be tied to them. They should have been a separate thing entirely, so that people can acquire them without being forced to gain the Milestone achievements.

I like that idea, separate the achievements.

You are playing the full game you paid for, when TF2 arrived there were no promises of new levels, new weapons or new achievements to be added. But they did provide them anyway without charging you extra for such a thing.

If they were charging to be able to unlock new weapons after buying the game then I'd probably see cause for uproar, because you're creating multiple classes within the game based simply on money, not ability. If someone is crazy enough to do all the achievements then so be it, they earned that reward, there's no entitlement based on a lack of desire to do the work.

If that statement worked at all then games like BF2 would have been forced to open up to the crys of world long ago, but it never has had to do such a thing and it never will.

I dont plsay TF2, but am considering buying it. However, I have heard from other sources that the achievements are hard to get. Maybe if they were less hard to get, this medic rampage would have been over. Valve really shouldnt have tried in the first place, anyhow. COD 4 and Battlefield are the ones you look to for that kind of stuff- people who want to play TF2 are just looking for some fragging

They removed *all* my achievements even the ones I earned legitimately. This is so screwed up, Valve used to be the company that could do no wrong... not anymore, they've permanently scarred their image with the gaming community.

Jeez, its ONE mistake, its not the end of the world, Valve are still brilliant for continuing to add to the game even after its been bought. They gain nothing from adding these things.

Also hard achievements are ok to me, I don't feel like I've really acheived anything if EVERYONE else also has that achievement. Atleast this way when you have it, you can be proud of your self.

They didnt scare their image at all. Everyone makes mistakes. Unlocks need to be in a game so those that play it the longest have the greatest skill set to choose from. What they should have done was put in 3 acheivements at once so that everyone wasn't playing only one class

Haha, they rolled back my achievements, however this isnt actually a bad thing for me. i did get a few of the medic achievements legit which they did remove, HOWEVER, there was one achievement in the general section that i didnt have (the achievement "with friends like these") which i didnt exactly have any way of getting, that they ended up giving me. which is pretty cool.

anyway i cant wait for new weapons for the other classes.

I got rolled back too, but today i checked my email, and i had an email from Robin Walker saying that they rolled some legit people and are giving them all 3 weapons and all medic achievements as consolation. Which is awesome.
