Looks like it may be a dual-core GPU card
Website VR-Zone posted some supposed specifications of the semi-mythical 9900 GTX late last night.
Both the 9900 GTX, and ATI's next big monster -- the yet-unnamed HD 4000 series RV770 GPU -- are rumored to be coming out in June.
The 9900 GTX apparently will be a dual-GPU card -- but not in the regular sense. Instead of two separate GPUs, it looks like the 9900 GTX will have 2 processing cores in one chip (like a Core 2 Duo.) Both GPU cores are G92 based derivatives. Single-core G92 GPU's currently are in a number of NVIDIA's recent cards, including the 9800 GTX and 9800 GX2.
The 9900 GTX will have 192 stream processors, GDDR3 memory (most probably a gigabyte), 32 ROPS, and a 512-bit memory interface. This is going to be a pretty big card -- almost as big as the 9800GX2 probably, and will have a length of 10.5 inches, with a double-slot cooler crafted by the folks at Cooler Master. The clock speeds for the 9900 GTX have not surfaced yet.
So, what does this mean in the end? Well if you are lucky enough to have two 9900GTX cards, you can finally play Crysis at 2560x1600, very high details and with 4XAA, "smoothly." (About time!)
The suggested sale price for the 9900GTX has not yet been released, but I would imagine that this monster would sell for around $425-$450 initially.
We'll have the review here on launch day so check back.
I'm guessing it will not be a fast as the 9800GX2, and will compete against the RV670, so I really don't think it would be over $500.
No thanks...
If I ever make a custom PC, I'd stick with good, but cheaper cards....I want to play PC games, but not THAT badly....
Just wait and see in February 2009. Better one is on the way with another rip-off price!!
I'm getting tired of their despicable money-making schemes out of nothing at all!!!
Just Stop making New GPU cards and instead they'd better invent like PS3's Cell.
I'd check the output scores first before just complaining about the companies, if I remember right the RV670 in dual config is supposed to do about a teraflop while the Cell in the PS3 doesn't come to that level using the CPU with an estimation of around 100 Gigaflops.
One problem with that setup is that there really aren't any games out that would take advantage of that kind of power (besides Crysis.) Maybe when Fallout 3 comes out..?
Psh. You mean enslavement machines. Skynet here we come.
A 2 GPU version of the dual core chips would be cool to see, but only if they can actually manage to write a decent driver to take advantage of it, if they can't then it's still a waste of money.
Iamjoe -=> Way to think big dude. That machine would be fast.
MS is doing a partner giveaway this week it seems for a quad core 16GB workstation. Although it'd be nice to see a 16 core 64GB rig going on. XD
