GTA IV sells like crazy, and give Xbox 360 sales a boost
Leo Chan - Thursday, May 8th, 2008 | 11:17AM (PST)

It was the craziest launch yet in the history of interactive entertainment, that's for sure

Microsoft is already giddy over the release of Grand Theft Auto IV for the Xbox 360, and for the time being their console's version of Rockstar and Take-Two's blockbuster action adventure appears to be enjoying greater success than the PlayStation 3 edition.  GTA IV thus far has sold 6 million units worldwide for some massive damage, netting some $500 million USD in sales; first day sales alone were 3.6 million units.  That's well over Take-Two's original estimate of $400M USD, and certainly a new record for the gaming industry.  U.K. sales figures were already posted here, and are included in Take-Two's report.

Approximately 60 percent of all GTA IV sales during launch week were for the Xbox 360 version, according to data culled by Microsoft.  Additionally, the game's launch last week helped push 360 console sales in the U.S. up by 54 percent compared to previous weeks, and over 40 percent of new 360 consoles were purchased alongside a fresh copy of GTA IV.

We already know that GTA IV is the hottest game on Xbox Live, and Microsoft is ready to share the stats to back this.  Over 2.3 million Xbox 360 gamers have played the game over Xbox Live since its release last week; XBL saw the patronage of around one million concurrent users over the past weekend.  XBL gamers have played GTA IV online for an average of four hours per session, setting another XBL record for the most time played.  In total, Xbox 360 gamers have unlocked over 12 million achievements (worth over 100 million gamerscore points) in GTA IV.

What about the PS3 sales numbers? Did it boost PS3 sales?

I would be one of those people who purchased GTAIV. Albeit, for the PS3 not the 360.

Don't worry PS3 Fans, at this stage, the total numbers of PS3 owners are relatively smaller than XBox 360 owners.

As a matter of fact, GTAIV failed to boost PS3 sale!!!!

Yo Momma...

lol @ THM, PS3 IS selling more now especially as reviews say that graphics look better in the PS3 and the controls work better for the PS3 control (signs of things to come, u think?)...

when people go and buy the Xbox for GTA IV they fail to ask themselves why is it that Microsoft is investing at least 50 million USD more than SCE is spending for the PS3 version?

the answer is quite obvious if u think about it.. if you just imagine the scenario where microsoft hadnt bought the extra downloadable content (DLC) how would the sales be now instead? so from this we can conclude microsoft is admitting that their console would outsell the PS3 unless they did something about it..

but why would they be admitting their console needs the help? and than when u think about the hardware capacities of both consoles u see that the PS3 is superior.. so the way i see it is that Microsoft is making all this extra effort with GTA IV because they need it because they know that their product isnt better than its competition..

if u look at it in another way.. Microsoft is just trying to make u buy a product which is already maxed up in capacity, by offering you some DLC..

the way i see it is, and i plug in SCE's market behavior into this opinion.. I will stick with PS3 due to its marketing seems more loyal as it knows it has the better product.. and will not get into a trap in buying an Xbox360 because its a product which is already reached its maximum point of capacity..

if u dont believe it, Bizarre Creations (the producers of project gotham racing) now been purchased by activision has leaked rumors that it has reached a point where they cant make the games any better, with the xbox, partially due to the fact that bluray could allow more space etc etc.. so for them to go to ps3 would allow them to design a better game..

50 million more? How about 50 million in general. Take 2 doesn't get money from Sony or MS to produce a title, they do it on their own through their own funding. Amazing realization I know.

Control systems are subjective, need I even bring Lair into this mess? Should I say that the backwards control system is a sign of things to come as well? Don't be silly when you fanboy rant it's pathetic.

MS and Sony are in this thing called competition, if you think that the company you're investing in isn't going to do all that it takes to win buyers then you're being foolish. If Sony had a chance to latch down exclusive content or titles they'd do it in an instant, they wouldn't debate if it made them look cheap. They wouldn't care, because it would bring them more sales.

Playing ignorant and pretending that MS is grasping for space is silly though. Either company would lash out for an edge just to shove the other further away and get into more homes.

If the PS3 marketing is loyal then I need to see this in person. How many SKU's have they done in the course of a year now? Yeah. Right. Loyal.

As for Bizarre Creations, maybe there should have been a leak as well that they moved from the Dreamcast because they reached a point where they couldn't make games any better on that as well, due to space, etc etc. =P unfortunately what you fail to mention is that Bizzare Creations is going multi-platform and that they're not focusing on PS3 exclusives, you see for that to happen they would have had to have been bought by SCEA, not activision.
