Xbox 360 scheduled for a makeover in 2009

Rumors of a slimmer 360 are brewing.

Microsoft has been up to quite a lot, and it looks like the Xbox 360 is getting a much needed revamp for next year.

No confirmation has been given regarding a slimmer console, but Microsoft has been on a mission to reduce production costs for the 360.

The Taiwan Economic News has reported that the first wafers with 65 nm GPUs are now ready to join the 65 nm Xenon CPUs.  Still, there's no word on whether the GPUs and CPUs will get a die shrink.  Apparently, Microsoft isn't comfortable with making any sort of changed until they're more certain of the manufacturing process.

However, the TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd.) is going to start producing the Valhalla chip, which will be the foundation of the Xbox 360's mid-cycle alteration, which has been dubbed "Xbox 2.5" or "Xbox 540" for Fall 2009.  The new chip will give Microsoft the opportunity to redesign the 360 casing if they wanted to go for a sleeker, slimmer look, following in the footsteps of Sony's PS2.

Rumors are also suggesting that Microsoft is looking for a more efficient cooling method, which will hopefully be an even cheaper alternative.  And by "cheaper" I hope they mean cost, not quality.  I'm not sure consumers would be too happy if the new Xbox 360 had worse heating issues than the current ones.

No, still no word on an internal Blu-ray drive.  I wouldn't get my hopes up.

why don't they focus on finding a way to fix their RRoD problems other than having to give 'em back to M$ labs...

Yeah, as it turns out Microsoft sees no need to revamp the 360. I can't say I mind, since I like the way it looks as is. The PS3, on the other hand, should seriously consider a new (smaller) look.

The news about a new look are just rumors, but Microsoft is still going to be reworking the internal design, I bet. It's too bad I still have the first generation 360 (it's being repaired right now, speak of the devil).

Most of the RRoD issues are caused by overheating. I'd say a better cooling system would be helping the cause.

The amount of redesign rumors around is pretty large, something like this was a given to be blown up shortly after hitting the net.

A chip revision doesn't mean a new casing, if that was the situation then the PS3 would be working into their 3rd re-design of the console since they keep revising the chip package and cooling system.

Nice to see they're still working on the die shrink, calling it a 2.5 / 540 is honestly pretty foolish though to say the least, a die shrink wouldn't result in performance benefits just like integrating the GPU on the CPU die wouldn't increase the performance. People spreading these things should educate themselves a bit more before throwing out large amount of nonsense onto the net.

Isn't that what the Net is for, Veg?

By the way, I love the new picture.

You would think, but the places that start the rumors often figure that it'll boost traffic for a few days to spread misinformation. I mean really, if their prediction comes to Xbox 2.5 or Xbox 540, it's almost a given that it'll be shot in the face days later.

It's like you buying your video card again with a smaller die using less power for the same work, yeah, there is potential to clock it faster but they're not gonna do it since it would mess up the lineup and pretty much piss off everyone who bought it at the slower speed.

thx about the pictar. the whole mix is in my signature.

I'm glad to see MS doing the chip revisions. Hopefully if my system bites the dust I'll score one of those models complete with HDMI. haha
