Company will not be renewing ESA membership.
The Entertainment Software Association has confirmed that LucasArts has left their organization, following in the recent footsteps of Activision and Vivendi.
A formal statement was issued by ESA Senior VP of Communications Rich Taylor:
"Since its creation in 1994, the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has grown and evolved into the pre-eminent voice of the video and computer game industry. The organization has 25 members, including three companies that were welcomed last year.
"Today, we can confirm that one of our members, LucasArts, has decided not to renew its membership. We value each member of our association, but respect the unique factors that led to LucasArts' decision.
"Last year was a record year for an industry which is becoming an increasingly important part of the nation's social, cultural and economic landscape. We are confident the industry will continue to thrive and ESA will continue to create a beneficial environment for the entire entertainment software industry."
Joystiq received a confirmation from LucasArts, explaining that while they are no longer a part of the ESA, they will still be participating in E3.
Margaret Grohne, Director, Public Relations for LucasArts:
"We can confirm that LucasArts is no longer a member of the ESA. As a company we are still committed to bringing consumers the best interactive experience possible and support the ESA's mission in the industry. LucasArts will be participating in E3."
A while ago, LucasArts declared that they would be returning to their roots by focusing on Star Wars games. To be perfectly honest, not much has come out of the American developer and publisher company since then, except maybe another Sam & Max installment and rumors of a KotOR sequel that were quickly shot down.
In a way, this may be the best course of action for LucasArts right now. If they are failing to deliver more than one to two titles per year, then dishing out membership fees to the ESA is really quite pointless.
doesnt seem good for lucasarts..
I used to like Lucas quite a bit back in the day, then they started flooding the market with titles and sequels and they stopped making the quality titles I used to respect them for.
Hopefully things turn around for them, I'd like to see them back in the ring simply because they did experiment with story and gameplay a good amount.
