Inde game source has to wear shades
Fans of Nintendo's WiiWare (myself included) can celebrate: the new source for oft-independent games (as well as applications) will be seeing well over 100 titles in the future, now at "various stages of completion."
When asked why Nintendo didn't procure any of its own works for the WiiWare launch in North America, NOA's senior director of project development, Tom Prata said they're working on some 'experimental projects' for the future, but for now they felt the diverse selection was more than adequate:
"As we looked at the launch line up, we wanted to provide games that are widely appealing to all consumers -- something for everyone to enjoy. Equally diverse are the creators of these games representing companies of different sizes and cultures. These companies demonstrate the range of WiiWare developers from a large publisher like Square Enix, to established independent developers such as High Voltage and Frontier to small indie developers like XGen."
He's certainly spot on about the large array of developers involved in WiiWare; Hudson (who did Star Solider R, Bomberman and Joysound for WW) will be releasing 10 games for it this year alone, and Namco and Konami have announced their own plans, not to mention Capcom. Really, it's just great to see big ol' developers next to the little guys, and everyone supporting each other. Especially in times like these, developers need to unify!
