Sunday Special: Fanboys

Their existence is a paradox

Fanboys, what's there to say about them?  We have all encountered at least one in our lifetimes, being mostly gamers.  They dwell mostly on the internet, hiding behind the soft, comforting glow of a computer monitor, where they endlessly add big bold text to odd images of animals in hopes of creating the next fad on 4chan.

Of course, there are those who show their faces to the public, and you'll encounter them in obvious locations such as your local GameStop or conventions.  That's not to say they can't be found anywhere else though.

Most recently, Neoseeker saw a gathering of fanboys in response to a weekend blog post Gutting the PS3, in which Sean briefly expressed his opinions regarding each console.  Countless self-righteous PlayStation 3 fanboys pounced upon seeing a chance to right several wrongs they saw in the post, then followed by the Xbox 360 fanboys who were indignant about all this PS3-praising.  Honestly, most of the comments were badly written and painful to read.

Under normal circumstances, encountering a well-written and or thought-out comment is refreshing, but when touched by that condescending tone of supposedly learned fanboy, it makes you slap yourself about as much as the horribly garbled ones.  The fact that there's even different types of fanboys is mind-numbing, and if they must be neatly categorized, I can see a total of three general parties.

Allow me to elaborate.

The perfect fictional example.  Beware: appearances may vary.

The Intellectual fancies himself an educated individual whose mission is to bring enlightenment to the masses.  This doesn't mean he's actually received a college degree or any sort; on the contrary, he could range from a college graduate to a little twit still trudging through the 7th grade.  He is superior, and makes that quite clear in his (usually) intelligible posts on forums and comments for articles.  He might even write his own from time to time, adopting a voice quite similar to Tycho's, the "better half" of Penny Arcade.  In most cases, attempting to argue with this person will prove futile, as with most arguments initiated over the internet.

Your best chances of putting this fanboy in his place is a real-life encounter where they won't have the luxury of spending hours composing and editing long-winded rebuttals.  My personal experiences have shown me the best solution is indifference, with a casual, "I don't care."  Then again, this may be on account of the fact that I'm a girl, and being cut off to be subsequently shot down by the opposite sex is as effective against these fanboys as a 20-hit combo to the nuts by Robert Downey Jr.  Console fight thinly masked as a Vader versus Yoda argument?  I'm buying Soul Calibur IV for the actual core characters that kept me interested during the entire franchise, not Star Wars cameos.

Likes posters and calendars of bikini models, beer, and apparently Irish Spring soap.

The Mentally Impaired is another specimen, often used as the satirical representative for the whole concept of fandom.  Unlike his counterpart, the Intellectual, this person doesn't care so much for conherent speech and doesn't realize other human beings can't always follow his thought process.  Instead, his posting method consists of rolling his face across the keyboard, sometimes with CAPS LOCK on cruise control.  Uninterested in the exchange of ideas or converting nonbelievers, his only purpose is to spread the myth that spelling no longer matters on the internet.  Oblivious to a fault, arguing with this individual may prove annoying to infuriating for most of us; witty retorts will be lost upon him, and he'll continue his massacre of the English language none the wiser.

His favorites usually consist of (but are not limited to) Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4.  In real life, this fanboy is more difficult to isolate because you see, no actually talks like he types.  He could be the 10-year-old shirking his mother's hand, or that tool wearing his sports visor sideways with his shirt collar flipped up.

The faceless one; I could very well put my own image here.

The Peace Lover might be considered the rarest breed of fanboy only because he hardly speaks.  His voice is easily drowned out by those of the previous two examples because no one ever listens to people who straddle the fence.   He isn't interested in which side wins an argument and considers such squabbles to be wastes of time.  As such, more often than not he'll try to resolve such situations by presenting two sides of the argument as a single evaluation, hoping against hope that the conflict will be resolved.  As far as consoles go, he's likely had ample experience with all three currently on the market and understands that they all bring something a little different to the video gaming table.

Honestly, there's no specific way to deal with him in real life because he isn't the sort of person to instigate a heated and asinine bout of fanboy headbutting.  This is not to say the Peace Lover is passive and diminutive; if provoked and all other attempts to diffuse the situation fail, he can snap back with teeth bared, targetting the other party directly and (sometimes) personally.

When such console fanboys fight over the superiority of their respective machines, they seem to forget logic.  Now if someone bought a Nintendo Wii, then they obviously chose not to get a 360 or PS3.  The same can go for any console owner.  So what's the point of saying such-and-such isn't a Blu-ray player or so-and-so has better third-party games?  We each made our own decision, and we don't need someone foaming at the mouth questioning our personal tastes.

So did you just buy a PS3 and wanna brag about it?  As a proud Xbox 360 owner, I still encourage your sense of console pride, and I would certainly love to talk about the latest title both our platforms happen to share.  But should you inadvertently stumble into the realm of unwarranted 360 or Wii bashing, just pray I don't see through your console purchase as material compensation for your own lack.

I suppose this behaviour all stems from some weird compulsion to stifle individuality. I blame the establishment. Haha.

This has to be one greatest articles in recent memory. And perfect timing, most of the comments on yesterdays article Gutting the PS3 were painful read. I don't understand how people can be so crazy about a console that they lose all reasoning ability.

i join fanboy fights just for the heck of it, truth is, i don't have a favourite console, if i had to choose one it'd be the ps2
a system like the ps2 is the ideal console for me, it can play games and that's all i'm interested in, i can always use my pc to play movies or listen to music or play something online with others
so yeah, if there was a ps3 version with no blu-ray and other worthless (for me) features, i'd go ahead and buy it, the only features i'm asking are backwards compatibility and game playing
the 360 is closer to my ideal console example than the ps3 and is cheaper because of it so i bought the 360, simple as that
actually, i also wanted to play games like oblivion and future ones that my pc couldn't so that meant something too, since some games come out both for the pc and 360, i don't see them coming for the ps3 though...*cough*mass effect, halo, gears of war, others*cough*
of course, the ps3 has its exclusives too like mgs4, eye of judgement and others but i personally don't care, the one i cared about some years ago was ff13 but seeing some videos and screenshots i lost interest, besides, its not even an exclusive anymore...
and i know i haven't touched the wii but i don't really know what to say, its the cheapest of the consoles and it is close to my ideal console example but the games it has are a little too...childish?
sure i'd like to play fatal frame 4 but aside that and 1 other game i'd like to play i know i'll just keep looking at my wii gathering dust...

Yea me too, it can be entertaining. I definitely got a few laughs from gutting the PS3 article. JT basically summed up what I was thinking right after my big post. But I guess all the PS3 praise got to me. Not saying the console itself is bad though.

I personally think arguments about which console is better is pretty useless.

People who try to force their own favorite console onto others are just like the people, and this is an example, on Gunz, who call you a 'n00b' if you use any weapon besides their favorite, the shotgun.

I don't know what reward is in it for them to start getting angry and cussing, just to prove the console they play is the best.

Theirs fanboy types?!?!? LOL. Whens the fangirl type arcticle coming out? If anything i know many people who are the third type of fanboy. although a few are a little bit crazy over the games of the 360. (if its a good game i'll play it. And sometimes i like the sleeper games too.)

Btw what about the extreme fanboys?

I look forward to Sunday Specials, they're always fun to read. Sorry I don't have anything to say on the subject, I have not met many fanboys that annoyed me.

Well, I was not joining the fanboy fight, I would not call it fanboy fight at all.

Just keep in mind that, we are just doing a great videogame console debate which is an important part of the democratic societies across the globe!!!!

Anyway, I enjoyed that debate and appreciated all PS3 fans!!!!

Long Live PS3..Long Live PS3..... (Repeat).

    Another great Sunday Special!

Hmmm.. I think another possible fanboy category could be the Instigator. They are the type to start a console debate, even if it has very little to do with the story they are commenting on.

And my personal favorite, the group I'd call Anti-PC Fanboys. Whenever a PC game is being talked about, the Anti-PC Fanboys love to rag on the PC, with arguments that are totally inaccurate and flawed (such as how PC's are way more expensive than consoles, and how PC gaming is dying etc.)

PC gaming may not be dying, but how do you see PC gaming being the same price, or less, than consoles?

Granted, to get the newest games, you need to buy a whole new console, but that would be what? Every 5 or 6 years? PCs (ones for modern games) can cost anywhere from about 800+ (depends on whether you built it yourself, your monitor and your tools). Consoles cost a bit more than half of that, to less than half of that.

This doesn't even account for having to upgrade every two years or so (depending on your initial investment on a GPU).

Not anti-PC gaming (just wish my PC was up to snuff), but I can't really see how you can get the newest games, and still fall at/under the price of consoles.

Your argument is fine, if you're talking about comparing 'older' PC gaming to modern console gaming. But then it would fail again, if you compared older PC gaming to older console gaming.

    Nice article, besides.

Well there's different reasons to why the price of computers might be higher. They can encode movies and music. Along with that they can burn those things to CDs/DVDs. You can use a computer for picture storage or music storage. Also just simple internet browsing or talking on Aim with friends. Also I kind of need a computer so I can put ringtones on my cell (I feel paying for them doesn't make much sense). That one probably only pertains to me though.

So I guess if you were talking about gaming only then yes get a console. But a PC is not limited to gaming. And depending what you use it or may not use it for, you can probably cut the price down. For example you don't necessarily need a quad core to play video games. The only part that you may want to spend a little extra is the video card, and you can work around that.

Plus computers have the ability to overclock depending on what you have. Although that's not for everyone.

But me personally I see nothing wrong with owning a PC AND a console.

tallteen -=> You can build a reasonably powerful (i.e can play all of 2008's games fine) PC gaming computer without a monitor for like $450 if you know what you are doing, which is a comparable price to a console. For real!

A 8800 GT can be had for $100, 2 Gbs of DDR2 for $50, a budget mobo for $80, etc. It can be done.

Maybe I'll write an article up explaining how to do it -- it seems that most people think you need to spend at least $1000 to get gaming on a PC.

You do need to spend at least $1000 if you're only after bragging rights.

Otherwise systems built years ago still manage fine with the games of today. I haven't upgraded anything outside of storage for editing purposes for years now and my system ran Crysis: Warhead at respectable speeds where I could still enjoy the technical achievements without getting 3fps.
