Apple: iPod Touch is the best portable gaming device

Apple reveals big plans for the iPod

At Apple's "Let's Rock" event in San Francisco, CEO Steve Jobs and his team galavanted about a stage in front of massive screens showing off their latest improvements for the iPod Touch and iTunes 8.

One of these major updates may have gaming companies like Nintendo and Sony a little worried -- or not.   Toward the end of the presentation, an Apple ad boldly claimed, "It's the best portable device for gaming."

Jobs introduced a handful of games to be made available for the iPod Touch, including Need for Speed: Undercover, Real Soccer 2009, and Spore Origins.

Backing up the unspoken challenge, Apple announced that users "have downloaded 100 million apps" from the App Store.  That's a lot of apps; let's hope most of them aren't anything like "I am Rich".

Not like they'll say "Oh, the gaming component is mediocre". Talk is cheap, after all....

I know that image is just a picture of a screen, but the graphics aren't that good....Dunno how easy it would be to play either >_>

And....interesting app....It actually sold 8 times, so that is $8000 or so (minus any $'s that need to go to Apple).....

It will face the same bad destiny like Nokia's Ngage.

In terms of portable gamings, nothing beats Sony's PSP and Nintendo's DS.

Others portable consoles are well below mediocre!!!

I don't think it's the best portable gaming device, but it sure is one product that can't be matched in terms of its overall abilities. I mean, there are a lot of different apps, games included, iPod, semi-PDA, etc... It's a good all-around device. Best for gaming? Nah... but good enough for a whole lot of non-hardcore gamers.

Don't really have much to add to the article. But I'd like to say the new ipod touches are still expensive and the max is still 32gbs. That's just pathetic.

It certainly seems like one of those situations where you'd say, "Everyone I know has an iPod Touch."

Apple really is a marketing whiz, but I "upgraded" from a 20gb iPod to Microsoft's Zune. I can sync it with my 360, and Zune's application isn't quite as intrusive as iTunes. Good lord I hate iTunes. If it weren't for iTunes, I might actually be less opposed to iPods. And call me old fashioned, but I don't really mind keeping my mp3 player (Zune), portable gaming platform (Nintendo DS), and phone (LG Chocolate) separate -- granted, they're talking about the iTouch (as I like to call it, for kicks), not the iPhone.

My homebrew PSP takes offense to that. Being able to play SNES, NES, Sega, and virtually all the PS1 titles at full speed without a clunky touch interface for the win.

In all seriousness though, I'm sorry, but all of these videogame control revolutions can *bleep* right off. There's nothing wrong with playing a videogame by hitting buttons. Besides, when you have to touch a screen to use it, and it's the only screen you've got you already can't see as much of that screen. So for many game types that whole idea just doesn't work. Also the built in button touch interfaces aren't responsive enough and besides, games need a tactile feel to be enjoyable I think.

Apparently they never heard of the N-Gage.

I'm agreeing with Alias353 here, I need my gaming consoles to have BUTTONS. I've tried playing Gameboy emulators on the iPod Touch and it seems pretty horrible to me that the buttons are on the screen so when you're playing your fingers cover up half of it.

Also my trusty old DS is pretty versatile, its all I need when I go on holiday. It can play videos & music, go on MSN, go on IRC, surf the web, emulate the SNES. I still have an mp3 player (Samsung P2) and a phone seperate though and I prefer it that way.

True, I'll give you the fact that the iPod Classic, shuffle, and maybe nano is out-done by Zune, but when it comes to the iPod Touch, there's no comparison! It beats all... you have to experience it to believe me.

@heytpn I agree with your whole statement. Except for the fact that the Ipod Touch is still very expensive and it only offers 32GB max. The Zune is 120GB and has a fairly reasonable price. So comparing the Ipod Touch to the Zune is like comparing a horse to a zebra, two totally different animals.

I know iPod Touch and iPhone are all the rage. I've "experienced" them, and I'm really not as crazy about a touch sensitive screen that flips in different directions as other people are. The novelty of it simply does not appeal to me, and I honestly cannot imagine the "iTouch" being a good gaming device.
