I can just see the Green's go ballistic

Nasa is thinking of powering some future moon outposts with nuclear reactors.

Frankly, that makes a lot of sense, as it would not have to rely on massive solar panels and even more massive batteries to store electricity for the long lunar nights.

Apparently NASA's Glenn Center in Cleveland is looking into the matter, and are currently waiting to see which of two advanced power conversion units would be most suitable to convert the heat generated by a nuclear reactor to electricity. It is expected that a nuclear reactor the size of a garbage can could provide 40KW of electricity, which on Earth would be enough to power four houses, but would be enough for a more sizable outpost on the moon.

    0.0 That's pretty amazing.

In the future, Nuclear power is the only option for Solar explorations as well as for the Earth's energy needs.

I'd be okay with that as soon as it becomes super super stable and controllable. I don't want anything like Chernobyl happening again...

Thats pretty amasing.Maybe nasa will get into the car market lolz jks but technically if they could make that garbage sized nuclear reactor or smaller it could power a electrical car or have insted of gas stations nuclear recharge stations.

Ill just make some solar powered units for that.

I dunno, if we can make Solar Panels even more efficient, (Apparently, modern solar panels are only taking a percentage of the amount of energy available from sunlight) perhaps the use of nuclear fission wont be needed on the moon. If the Solar Panel were more effective, you could store more energy to last long enough for the long lunar nights.

Dude, Chernobyl happened like 22 years ago, you really think something like that would happen again?

Yes, it might, but Chernobyl was in massive disrepair at the time, the safety backups weren't even running.
On a related note, i think fusion is the way of the future, not nuclear.

Yeah, fusion = better. I believe there is less waste as well?

And yes Mr Grim, there is another type of solar panel in development. It (once they work out the kinetic -> electrical power conversion) should be about 40%+ efficient, compared to the 5% - 10% efficiency of current solar panels....
