Mirror's Edge producer depressed by sexed up version of Faith

Fan alteration belies DICE's vision

You may recall a story from last month which depicted an Eastern alteration of Mirror's Edge character Faith. It wasn't at all official, but nevertheless resonated with fans and gamers in general. Here is a comparison of the two:

It may be easy to overlook at first, but besides the obvious breast enhancement, her face is changed as well. Funny how a few subtle adjustments can make one look drastically different.

Multiplayer thought to ask the game's producer, Tim Farrer, if he'd seen the images and what his feelings were on it. Indeed he had, and this is what he had to say:

“I remember when I first had that image sent to me. To be honest, I found it kind of sad. We’ve spent time in developing Faith. And the important thing for us was that she was human, that she was more real.

“We really wanted to get away from the typical portrayal of women in games, that they’re all just kind of tits and ass in a steel bikini. We wanted her to look athletic and fit and strong [enough] that she could do the things that she’s doing.

“We wanted her to be attractive, but we didn’t want her to be a supermodel. We wanted her to be approachable and far more real. It was just kind of depressing that someone thinks it would be better if Faith was a 12-year-old with a boob job. That was kind of what that image looked to me.”

I'm sure most of us can agree there's a place for women in games who are all "tits and ass in a steel bikini", but I believe women like Faith have their own place, too. As such, to corrupt that really is kind of...sad. I'm still unwavering in my "everyone should do whatever they want forever" position, but seriously -- if you want another girl with big breasts that looks like a 12-year old, there are a million of those out there already, no? On that note I'd like to extend props to DICE for creating a successful, realistic heroine -- they took major chances with many aspects of the game, and I think they deserve all the credit they get and maybe more. Realism is sexy too, people!

I'm surprised by the fan-made changes. I'm surprised that Korean fans would change her into a character that looks less Asian to me. I'm also surprised that anyone would think that Faith would be able to run around and be nimble with such large breasts.

I definitely prefer the original Faith...she looks like she has a lot more character than the second image, which looks like slightly unreal.

She may look less Asian to you, but she may better fulfill an Asian aesthetic. Large breasts, large eyes while maintaining the thin waistline. Compared to original-Faith she looks like a freak.

Are we talking Japan here? XD

Aye I prefer the normal faith, she has more character and that "mean-streak" the altered one looks like someone just caught her in the toilets

This barely deserves mention.. the image was from a forum, and the original artwork is awesome and real. The one on the left is anime style and unrealistic.. not the intent of this game at all and I'm glad to hear the developer feels this way.

Safe to be certain, most people feel the same way as the developer.. you can't blow things up out of proportion that is brought up by some kids on a forum.

I thought this was all about "blow[ing] things up out of proportion" ?
