Half-Life fans everywhere were pretty dissapointed when Half-Life: Source was released, essentially a mod that improved water and lighting. Considering the Source engine used for it was what powered Half-Life 2, this dissapointment was nothing short of understandable. However, fans can rejoice as a team has been working on a proper Half-Life 2 mod to power the original, and a trailer has just been released showing off what is called "Black Mesa":
I know I'm supposed to be professional and all that, but does this not look like one of the greatest gaming experiences ever? The part where the Collider explodes in particular gave me shivers. And since I never beat the last boss in Half-Life (I had to use a cheat code on that infamous part of the last level too -- yes I hang my head in shame for both of these gaming sins), this is an especially great treat.
Honestly they could partner with Valve and release this at full price and I'd buy it, along with tons of other gamers I'm sure. But it's free, all free! Well, the bad news is apparently any game using the Source Engine is required to be bought from Steam in order for it to work. I'm not entirely a fan of Steam, so hopefully an alternate method of implementation surfaces. I would hope owning a physical copy would do the job.
For more media and details on what the mod offers, head over to the Black Mesa website.
They really are doing an amazing thing given this has all been donated work and time to the project over the many years now, I don't think I'll honestly expect it though until it's here, they've had projections before but when your staff is pretty much doing it out of free time or random availability you can't fix too much into things.
I've rode on the updates for a while now and they are making good headway, I remember they had some hard hits a while back which seemed to bring the project to an absolute crawl.
Once it arrives though I'll most likely race into it just like HL1 all over again D:

All we have to do is wait for another infinity years. Sure, it says 2009, but Im going add 12 more years just to be safe.
Hehe.
From the site, though: "And as stated in the trailer, the days this mod stays in development are truly numbered. Hang tight, because at long last, it is coming."
haha I'll still hold tight until release, its not DNF status for the delays but it's been quite a few. I do look forward to the mod but I think I'll be reserved this time around for it to debut without riding on the fence for each update. ^^: sucks when they're like "we lost 1/4 of the models... have to rebuild them all"
I remember they had issues with models or people who were doing sections of the game on their own networks, basically having them quit the project for whatever reason or have a system crash and it was like ok we just lost all of this data because it was never stored in a central location.
This trailer reminds me how bad-ass and how original Half Life was back in the day. And now it's like it's coming out all over again. I want this mod. ._.

Better be!
