Call of Duty: World at War - Nazi Zombies explained

Because it just ain't a world war without zombies

Some may recall this lovely footage released from Call of Duty: World at War (WaW) about Halloween time:

Upon beating the main campaign, this 'Nazi zombie mode' is unlocked, featuring four player co-op whereby each wave of zombies are more difficult than the last. For those wondering what the heck Nazi zombies were doing in their World War II game, the game's publisher, Activision, has let loose on the what and why. Executive producer Daniel Suarez, commenting:

“It was one of the pet projects of one of the designers. The seed of the idea came out of casual [tower] defense games online. It was something that they [developer Treyarch] had been working on for a while and went back to when they had time.”

“Nazi Zombies was sort of this rumor, and everybody would be like, ‘Nazi zombies? What Nazi zombies?’ The designers would sort of chuckle in the back corner and be like, ‘I don’t know what that is.’ And then one day it all of a sudden appeared in a build and it got so much traction internally.”

“All of the QA guys, the marketing guys, even the PR guys became big fans. So we decided to save it and announce it [the week of Halloween on GameTrailers]. It was a project of love that a lot of guys had a hand in.”

Nothing against shooting Nazi zombies or anything, but it does make the game's sensitive footage and serious approach harder to accept on those grounds. I'd never be one to say it should be removed or anything like that, but what do you think?

I think it is a cool idea. Might be a little bit odd, but I don't think it detracts form the games more serious take on WWII. Cause, they don't appear in campaign.

I am all for the serious portrayal of WWII in the same game as zombie popping. If anything, I'd think have the sharp contrast between the two would help you appreciate each one a little more.

I personally loved it to bits. i think Treyarch has done a wonderful job of WaW and should be commended.
plus its fun to play in the middle of the night with the surround sound turned all the way up:D

I also think this a pretty good idea. As much of a crazy amount of zombie games have been coming out, I like the WWII angle on it.

Reminds me of this one part of the movie 'Heavy Metal'.

Yeah I dig it well enough I just wonder if maybe it should've been released separately somehow, or something..

If you feel like you need justification, well, the Nazis (Hitler in particular) were into the occult.

    Zombies are occult....

Screwed around with the supernatural a bit too much neh?

I don't think games should be taken too seriously at all. This sounds pretty fun if you ask me. Fun > realism anytime. Plus, in this game, you can experience how people from the late 1930's to 40's era would react to zombies! : O

The nazi Zombie Mode is good but limited there should have been more maps to unlock, maybe bigger areas to roam i.e bunkers, streets perhaps a graveyard match to watch them coming out the ground at you or just to being able to go outside and find snipe points or defendable areas they could of added a map maker. Maybe i expect to much from them guys but they could make a stunning game out of this concept and its abit of a half job to only have one level after completing the game on all levels

"...it does make the game's sensitive footage and serious approach harder to accept on those grounds..."

That has to be one of the dumbest comments I have ever read. It's a first person shooter video game where ammo and guns are everywhere and you don't really die! It is absolutely unrealistic! Have you ever played the game? What serious approach are you talking about? The way guns never jam? Or maybe how you heal yourself in seconds?

I think Treyarch is on to something with the Nazi zombies. I've grown more interested in playing that intense-standfastery more than on regular LIVE. They've got to work on expanding this version to include more maps, though. I don't see why we haven't heard about it yet. They should hold another map-making contest and get the work done for free. BTW, they keep coming until at least level 31...but its madness at that point so I don't expect to get much further.

I don't think any self respecting Nazi of the time would be opposed to such a presentation, the only downside looking like some of them had lost their cutesie 'Aryan' shine whilst underground. Have you looked into original fresh Nazism at all? Trust me they would dig it.

In terms of the gameplay, incredible fun. More Australians should host.
