EA announces three more 'Need for Speed' titles for 2009 Image 1

There's been a lot of doom and gloom discussions concerning layoffs at Electronic Arts and failure to meet revenue goals -- especially with Need for Speed: Undercover underperforming in 2008.  So it may be surprising to some that EA has announced plans to publish three more Need for Speed games in 2009.

One title has already revealed itself as Need for Speed: Shift, to be released for PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PSP.  Shift is meant to be a more "serious" racing simulation than previous titles, and the development is being overseen by Black Box executive producer Michael Mann and DICE co-founder Patrick Soderlund.  The workload will be carried by a new UK studio called Slightly Mad Studios.

The second upcoming game will be Need for Speed: Nitro, a Nintendo Wii and DS exclusive developed by EA Montreal.  No images of the game have been released yet, but EA promises a "unique visual style."

The third and final 2009 release is Need for Speed: World Online for PC, and the title is a clear indication of what to expect.  World Online will be a free-to-play online game developed by Black Box and EA Shanghai, targeting the Asian gaming market.  As such, Asian regions will be seeing an earlier launch this summer while North America must wait until winter 2009.

"This isn't about quantity, this is about crafting different games for different audiences and their unique tastes in the driving category," assures EA Games marketing executive Keith Munro.

EA has gone crazy I think. "Dead Space/Mirror's Edge/Need for Speed not selling well? Try again x3."

If they're great games, awesome..Im just kinda worrying EA will tank.

I think they should make Need For Speed: Drive Off Into The Sunset For A While.

I don't like the sound of a "unique visual style". I here those words and I think cartoonish and that won't go over well with me. :-P

Well, EA is overall a great company. Dead Space and Need for Speed Series are high selling assets for the company but only let down by its infamous "Mirror Edge" according to some gamers.

True, maybe that's what they're thinking. Maybe a lot of their other stuff is selling just as bad..

It could work for them, it's not like the games will be competing against each other. Need for Speed Shift looks like the big budget game, while Nitro and World Online will be more of the lower budget niche type games that could even things out financially if Shift sells poorly.

Personally I don't like the idea of a simulation style NFS. They should be trying to make it more like Burnout, less like Forza or Grid, the simulation market is getting a bit crowded these days.

I have a feeling that Nitro is going to try to cater to the Mario Kart crowd.

Personally, I hope EA tanks. It will be better in the long run.

I just want a Need for Speed game that was as awesome as High Stakes was. No crappy story, no stupid chick, no driving around the city to missions... just give me a through and through racing game, and I'll buy it.

Need for speed is already scarred with that concept of 'street=gangsta,' now they're trying to make it appeal to a serious audience?

Tell them to ditch the name, kill the annoying voiceovers, and stop milking their own titles.

EA is starting to become just like Nintendo...

World Online is going to flop so badly, I can see it already. Also why are they moving the police chases exclusively to the Wii. I've bought every NFS game so far but it looks like their about to break my winning streak (and cut up the small but dedicated fanbase they all ready have)by placing it on an exclusive platform.

Hmm, this brings so many issues into my head like what happen too the two year development cycle they said they where taking in order to improve games? When are these games going to come out, all at once or one at a time staggered across the year.

Shift sounds interesting but a lot of the realistic racing games have turned out too be rubbish. One hint, I like my racing wheel to feel connected to the action.

They could probably make a better comeback if they released NFS:Underground 3. The other 2 underground games were great.
