G4 network shifting spending
The G4 network is scaling back two of its daily programs, X-Play (video games) and Attack of the Show (technology, pop culture) to three and four episodes per week, respectively, as of March 2.
Additionally, a number of employees for said shows will be laid off, though reportedly the figure isn't in the double digits in terms of percentage.
G4's plan, evidently, is to re-arrange spending and invest more in other series beyond its two big daily shows -- an evening out, if you will. A network representative insisted the moves are not part of an overall budget cut, stating, "savings resulting from this move will go directly towards producing more original programming in 2009."
The network saw three years of growth cease last year; as with many others of its kind, it's struggled with monetizing its "substantial" on-demand and online video news content. The recession, of course, is hard to discount with the move, despite what G4 may say, especially with the recent discussions of expanding X-Play to an hour-long program.
Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb will continue to host X-Play, of course.
One of the reasons I don't get my tv through my phone company was because they didn't offer G4 (price was the other major factor), but if G4 is going to keep pulling this shit I won't have to worry about watching it again.
And bring back *bleep*ing arena!
