ATI releasing a HD 3830 video card next month

More ammunition to compete with the 9600GT.

Rumors coming from the far, far side of the pond (China) seem to suggest that ATI will be releasing a HD 3830 product next month. The card will be much like a HD 3850 (320 S.P's, 256MB, etcetera) but with a 128-bit memory interface. It will be priced around $119 and $129 dollars. While it seems that it'll have a very hard time competing up against the speedy and cheap 9600GT (often selling for around $149), ATI doesn't really have a good card currently at this price point, so it makes sense that they'd move to fill this gap.

It seems like the card will be a quite similar (or the same as) the HD 3690, which was only released in the East.

From my video card reviewing experience, I don't believe a HD 3850 with a 128-bit memory interface would be able to hold a stick to the 9600 GT's performance, but it is much too early to tell. However, on the other side of things, around that lower price point, $20 dollars can make all the difference.

Update: Website Fudzilla reports that the HD 3830 is going to be a China-only product. Presumably, ATI will just stick with the HD 3850 for now, bringing in price cuts as needed to compete.

For anyone who cares the slightest about performance, $20 would be nothing for the difference. The 9600 GT already beats the 3850 in piratically everything; I really don't think making a cheaper version with such a low bandwidth is good. It's not even like something you can overclock to change the difference; you'll have half the bandwidth no matter what.

Yes, I agree -- a 128 bit card just would not be able to compete with a 9600 GT, unless its something absolutely different than anything we have seen (which it is not likely to be.)

However, about the $20 price thing, for you and me it wouldn't be a factor in choosing cards; but many consumers do not read reviews, and when they just walk into a computer store say, and a salesman tells them the cards are pretty similar -- unless they read my reviews 8] -- they may just figure to go with the cheaper card, not realizing what a gulf of performance difference there could possibly be between the two.

This card is the one that is set to use ATi's "Crossfire" system, isn't it? I have a friend looking into getting two of these, crossfiring them and then adding in a hyperthreaded OS, 3.0+ Ghz Core two Duo, nto sure what sound card brand he likes...But anyways...maybe i should tell him this...By the way, Kev, you may know the guy, CillChaoi.

ATI has been using Crossfire since around the X800 series. The HD3xxx series are part of the their new 3x Crossfire deal though.

Hyperthreaded OS? odd, multi-thread for sure but which one really isn't multi-thread? Regardless of that, I don't think I'd want any OS built on Intel's failed attempt to duplicate the multi-thread processing in IBM chips. A 31 stage core 2 duo would be a great joke though to remind people how backwards intel was at some point.

HA!

lol. No, Cillchaoi has a rig with Hyperthreading, and it eats any games requirments for lunch. :S The thing runs at 3.6 Ghz. Nothing to scoff at.
